Highmark employees celebrate National Walk at Lunch Day

Filmmaker Gary Marino, of Boston, leads Highmark employees on a lunchtime stroll during today's National Walk at Lunch Day celebration at Highmark's East Pennsboro Township campus.

Workers at Highmark's office on Center Street in East Pennsboro Township didn't just go out for lunch today; they went outside.

Celebrating Blue Cross Blue Shield's 2009 National Walk at Lunch Day, the company's employees took to the sidewalks and trails around Highmark's complex for the event.

"The idea is to encourage folks to walk at lunch. We want to raise awareness of ways to get physically active in easy simple ways," said Elizabeth Murray, of Upper Allen Township, one of the local organizers.

Walkers were treated to bottled water and given maps showing the company's fitness walking trails before heading out on a walk led by Gary Marino, a Boston film director and producer who told the walkers how he lost over 100 pounds by walking and eating sensibly. Marino, who chronicled his efforts with the film "Million Calorie March", was also the guest speaker yesterday at a rally promoting today's walk.
