Dear Vincent:
I walk into the gym and immediately don't want to be there or get bored fast. No excuse right? Need advice, what do you suggest?
Hi writer, sounds like you need energy and some spice in your workout. My first suggestion is try music. Personally I love to listen to music during my workouts, the fun part is I get to burn and make CD collection of songs that are energetic to me. Second try to join aerobic classes between the instructor, music and other members around you this may contribute to helping. Third, choose exercises that are fun, such as a sport (basketball, soccer, swimming, etc). Exercise don't just have to be in the gym. Finally hire a Personal Consultant to evaluate, motivate and push you toward your health and fitness goals.
Dear Vincent:
I go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I do the recommended amount of thirty minutes a day of cardiovascular exercise. I am starting to feel like my results have stopped. Any suggestions?
Thank you for writing. I look at everyone's exercise routines as three parts: Frequency, Duration and Intensity. For example someone goes 3 days a week, for 30 minutes, the question is what is that individual's intensity? Our bodies get accustomed to our workouts and may get in a comfort zone. Time to "shock" our systems. If you cannot change frequency from 3 days, you need to increase your duration to 40 minutes plus and make sure your intensity is higher.
Dear Vincent:
I'm overweight by about 60 pounds and want to start an exercise program - but I don't know where to start to get the best results. I would like to try swimming, walking or weight training, but I'm not sure what burns the most calories. Any advice?
Always start with approval from your doctor. all of these exercises are great that you mentioned. I would start with walking and swimming. Both are safe and will begin to build a stronger cardiovascular system. After two weeks of conditioning I would consult a fitness trainer to start you with an introduction to weight lifting. One that meets your health and fitness goals, for example, a total body workout. With regards to which exercise burns the most calories, there is no quick answer, for the fact that each individual’s intensity may vary, which will burn more or less calories. My advice: Frequency, Duration and Intensity, monitored by a trainer, will contribute to reaching your goals.
Dear Vincent:
Two years ago I started a low impact cardio program using the cross trainer and treadmill. Now I've hit a weight plateau with 40 more pounds to lose. My dietitian thinks my body may have become conditioned to my current workout, and is simply no longer enough. What exercises do you recommend to kick-start my metabolism?
Everyone’s body adjusts and gets comfortable in an exercising routine. Shocking your system with a variety of exercise such as a low impact aerobic class or spinning may jump start the weight loss further. Never allow your body to get into a comfortable rhythm. Always consult a physician or trainer before starting a new routine.
Dear Vincent:
I have over 100 pounds to lose and would like to begin lifting weights. One of my doctors suggested I wait until I get the bulk of my weight off so I "don't build fat instead of muscle." Do you agree that I should put off weight training?
No, you still need to be functional. For example you use your muscles everyday whether sitting down, getting out of bed, picking up something from the ground. I am talking function, not body building looks. It is important to strengthen the muscles around your bones for support. Most important is a cardiovascular routine to strengthen your heart and lungs, which includes losing weight. Consult your physician before beginning a exercise routine and consider being monitored by a trainer to make sure you are exercising correctly and safe. Dear Vincent:
I've been overweight most of my life and would like to join a gym. The problem is that in every gym I've ever been to I don't see any people my size. I am self conscious, and I feel this could kill my motivation. Maybe I'm getting hung up over something I shouldn't. Any suggestions?
Don’t be intimidated or you will never leave the house. I understand that you feel self conscious, but the old saying is never judge a book by its cover. I have trained many beautiful and wonderful people overweight that felt the same way, that they didn't feel like they fit in. Some started training by walking outside or home gyms. Maybe hire a trainer that will keep you motivated and can introduce you to people in the gym to make you feel more comfortable. Sooner than you know it, people will be coming up to you telling you what a great job you are doing. It is a great way to meet new friends. I know for a fact from many of my clients’ experiences. Some met new friends, one met her husband and began a family. Don’t get hung up, and I will see you in the gym :-)
